Groenkloof at a glance

Groenkloof may very well be described as one of the most beautiful suburbs of Pretoria, added to which, it enjoys a superb location and access to the best of what Pretoria has to offer.  Perhaps it's greatest attraction however is the lush band of greenery that borders its southern side as it lies against the Groenkloof Nature Reserve as well as the recently rehabilitated Klapperkop Hill and Fountains Valley (just off Nelson Mandela Drive).  This band of greenery continues to flow from Groenkloof through to its neighbouring suburbs such as Nieuw Muckleneuk, Brooklyn and Waterkloof.

Groenkloof is shrouded in history and finds itself at the foothills of the four forts built to defend Pretoria during the Anglo-Boer War.  Iconic landmarks which lie nearby include The Voortrekker Monument as well as the Military Museum of Fort Klapperkop. It also shares its location with many of Pretoria's oldest and original designs and establishments, including the nearby Pretoria Railway Station, Nazareth House, schools such as Afrikaans Hoër Seunskool, Afrikaans Hoër Meisieskool, Pretoria Boys High School and Pretoria Girls High School, The University of Pretoria, Unisa and the Little Company of Mary Hospital.   Pretoria's city centre is just 3km away and across the valley lies the newly developed Hatfield Gautrain Station as well as Pretoria's iconic Union Buildings - the seat of Parliament.

An older, and well-established, suburb of Pretoria, Groenkloof has little room for new developments and properties still enjoy large stand sizes and equally large and classically designed family styled homes.  Over time many of the homes have been renovated and re-designed so there is a beautiful blend of classic and modern, meaning that residents are both young & vibey as well as older but comfortably well-settled.  There is a definite thread of style that runs through the suburb and residents as well as visitors to the greater Groenkloof area get to enjoy a selection of attractions with a choice of contemporary (older family styled restaurants and tea gardens for example) to the more modern type tapas bars, cafes and trendy eateries, shopping malls and centres, boutique type stalls, art galleries and garden centres, the Groenkloof Golf Course, parks and of course the various outdoor and adventures activities on offer at the Groenkloof Nature Reserve and Klapperkop Hill.

The greater part of Groenkloof's residential area enjoys the security of controlled access points and boomed gate entrances, allowing residents a sense of security with greatly restricted traffic flow and the freedom to enjoy walks with pets and youngsters or an afternoon stroll for older residents through what is very much a community-driven suburb.

CLIMATE:

With its lush natural surrounds and equally well-grown and manicured gardens (sometimes still present deep into the winter months), it goes without saying that Groenkloof benefits greatly from Pretoria's sub-tropical, warm temperate climate.

Summer days are warm to hot and often overcast in the afternoon as Pretoria enjoys summer rainfalls across the months September through to February and even March.  Winter mornings are generally cold, but warm up during the course of the day due to the mostly clear skies.

As winters do not receive rain, natural vegetation may dry up but soon re-emerges as spring breaks and the short bursts of afternoon showers, together with a warmer climate, feed life back into Groenkloof's "gorge of greenery".

MAIN ACCESS ROUTES:

Groenkloof may well be one of the best located suburbs in terms of quick and easy access to the major highways leading to and from Pretoria, travel to the city centre and neighbouring suburbs such as Nieuw Muckleneuk, Brooklyn, Hatfield and Waterkloof and further out toward the eastern suburbs.  Both the University of Pretoria and UNISA are only minutes away as are some of Pretoria's leading schools, parks and nature reserves, the OR Tambo International Airport, office parks and so much more.

Of the main throughfares are Jorrissen & Duncan Streets, Justice Mohammed Street which leads to the N1 Highway and George Storrar & Nelson Mandela Drives which leads to the N14 Highway.  Access to any of these take only a few minutes depending on the traffic.
